Formed in 1994, Nic de Mey Yachts started out building carbon prepreg rowing skiffs, ski race boats, weapon systems for the Australian Navy, and superyacht components such as carbon booms, boarding, and swim ladders.
Our first custom yacht build was a sailing cat called Silver Raider built in 1995, which dominated the Auckland multihull scene for many years. From there it was an upward progression into larger and more complex vessels all utilizing advanced composite construction. Our largest project to date is U21, a 21mtr foiling catamaran for renowned NZ businessman Graeme Hart.
Over the company’s 25-year history, Nic de Mey Yachts has become one of New Zealand’s premium boat-building companies. With a committed team of passionate boat builders and top-quality facilities in his Tauranga-based workshop, Nic de Mey builds world-class boats for clients across the World.

We are always looking to improve our processes, striving to improve quality and work environments, we use technology to full advantage
We never assume anything, we give clear concise instructions and outline our expectations before we start anything
We understand mistakes can happen and processes always need improving, we own mistakes and don’t let setbacks get us down, we work to understand what went wrong, and how it can be prevented again, and we never make the same mistake twice
We focus on absolute accuracy whether it be measurements, following plans or filling out documentation
We know our surroundings reflect on how we are perceived and how the end product will look, being organised and clean throughout the day is key to success
Nic is a qualified boatbuilder who started his career with an apprenticeship at race & luxury yacht builders Marten Marine Industries. Here he trained under specialists in advanced composite construction, working on boats for America’s Cup and Whitebread / Volvo Ocean Race boats before working on superyachts and all the systems and finishes they entail.
Nic is very keen on any form of boat racing, from yachts to powerboats. Since 1994, he has ski raced competitively on the New Zealand water ski racing circuit and has represented NZ at World Championship events.
Nic started his namesake boat building business in Auckland, before moving his business and his family down to his hometown of Tauranga.
“Moving to my hometown with my wife Chrissy and three fantastic kids – Zhané, Lexie and Nixon – means I’m able to continue my passion of building New Zealand’s best boats while having plenty of time to spend with my family.
When not building boats, I love enjoying the great NZ outdoors with my family – mainly getting out on the water to fish, dive and water ski.”
